Honestly, this article is bad, but it’s bad on purpose. I’m not sure he captured the essence of the street racing scene (as in: fucking boring) but the article is fucking boring, so he did nail that. After reading some comments, I’m with the staff on the issue of glorifying vs exposing.

To my mind, that was some of the most subtle of Orlove’ s writing that I’ve come across in some time.
To me it captures the total inanity, pointlessness and unproductive ness of the whole street racing scene whilst at the same time acknowledging that the people in it are (as in so many other hobby communities ) a real community of people that look out for each other.
That’s a tightrope successfully walked right there. All while the rest of us would take the easy route and just write that street racing is stupid (and it is) and the people who do it are dumb animals without care or conscience (when they are just actually people) .

I felt like it was a decent piece of satire. It read like a train wreck that he didn’t want to write about, because it was a train wreck of an experience so why the hell should he have to relive it, and by God (or Spaghetti Monster if you prefer) if he has to relive that hell, then he’ll let you experience it through his writing.

I just read it and agree completely. It doesn’t glorify or denounce street racing/drifting because that’s not the point, it’s just a narrative of a night out with some drifters and it gives a glimpse into their attitude, mindset and camaraderie. It is up to the reader to take from that what they will.
It just seems a lot of commenters got their panties in a bunch because Raph didn’t directly criticize those who hoon on the streets. A gain, this wasn’t the point and it looks like most commenters missed it.
